I had the privilege of reading Too Brief A Candle while it was still a manuscript. J. M. Barlow has thoughtfully written about this tragic true story with meticulous detail. Her personal interjections, occasionally laced with well-placed sarcasm, enhance the depth of the courtroom drama.Barlow took on a legal monster when she committed to reveal the truth behind a life extinguished far too young. In doing so, she moves us out of our comfort zone and into the real world that’s not always safe or petty. As the reader becomes immersed in the day to day trial proceedings, including all of the colorful objections, delays and legal word games, the despicable loss of little Maria is ever present.
It’s raw, honest, detailed, sad and hopeful. Hopeful in that Barlow cared enough to enlighten readers to the reality of child neglect and abuse. We are both anguished and moved to make a difference as Barlow is donating to Heartbeat International Missions and the missions program at Bible Baptist Church from the profits of her book.
As an aside, legal wrangling well after the trial ended in the form of possible appeals, delayed the book’s release. In the genre of True Crime, Too Brief A Candle’s flame will shine.

I also read this book in manuscript. A gripping story how babies are abused
So often by those that are suppose to be their caretakers.
A wonderful read! Kimberly Ledbetter
I felt it was a third person narrative of her experience watching and reporting the information for a book. I buy books on occasion because of subject but this was not about the child's life or criminal investigation of even the family's way of dealing with situation. It did describe the negative things that happen in a trial such as blaming the victim's family, and gossip but If I wanted to read about a court case I could have bought a book about court cases but I would rather have learned about the situation and how it was handled rather than the authors narration of the court procedings. During the first chapter,. . there is information about the family and the event but after the first two chapters I could not remember the child or families name
Be prepared to experience a range of emotions from this must-read, detailed account of a precious innocent life lost too soon. J.M. Barlow takes you through a highly charged trial containing a variety of interesting witnesses and subject matter experts. The family of Maria Harris suffers an unthinkable loss and allows Barlow to tell their story with warmth and dignity. Though justice is served in the end, it is a tragic loss for everyone involved.
This book grabs you from the introduction on page 13 and does not let go through more than 400 pages. The author provides an extensive trial account, with author analysis, regarding the death of little Maria Harris after her first day in a home day care setting. Be ready to shed tears and applaud this author's tenacity.
Makes one wonder about an era where daycare is so necessary It poses a danger to both the children and the caregivers.
The heartbreaking true story of a child abused by the caretaker that was entrusted with her well being. Barlow takes you on a step by step journey throughout the initial court process and trial. The author will keep you turning pages as you seek justice for the heartbroken family and innocent child. This momentary act of abuse and neglect changed the lives of so many, and ended the light of a beautiful soul entirely too soon. The author prioritized detail and the book is very well written. This is a must read for those considering and researching child care options, and proof that things are not always as they appear.
