Chris “Shooter” Sullivan has returned to his home town of Rapid City, South Dakota to pick up the pieces of his life shattered by a roadside bomb in Iraq. He only wants to focus on holding what’s left of his old unit together, running his garage where he builds custom bikes and cars, and pretending that his murdered father’s motorcycle gang doesn’t exist.

Hayley Turner is a young woman with her own traumatic past. Fresh off the bus from Nowhere, USA, all she wants is a job and a place to live, until it’s time for her to leave again. She doesn’t want to make friends, or enemies, least of all the ex-Army Ranger who obviously doesn’t like her. She bristles under his watchful eye. He’s even got her convinced she’s bad news.

But circumstances force two people who don’t need anyone to need each other more and more. The more Chris gets to know Hayley, the harder it is to stay detached. And the more Hayley gets to know Chris, the more she realizes she’s been alone for so long she might never recover from it.

Shooter Burnout Book 1 edition by Dahlia West Literature Fiction eBooks

Hayley has been on the run for five years. She arrives in Rapid City and hunts for a job and place to live. She gets a job in a biker bar and rents a motel room. Chris is a former Army Ranger and owns a custom bike shop with his biker/ex Ranger buddies. He believes Hayley is a con artist and doesn't trust her. But he rents her his house when he finds out where she is living. She becomes a fixture in their lives but she is keeping secrets and Chris will do anything to protect her. But her past comes back and Chris is afraid he's lost her forever. I laughed out loud. I didn't cry but my heart broke for Hayley. Cold shower needed. A woman who never stays in one place more than six months, finds a home with a biker. A couple of errors that caused me to read the same lines to figure out what was being said. Not for the faint of heart.

Shooter Burnout Book 1 edition by Dahlia West Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is Chris and Hayley’s story and I was drawn into it. A woman on the run, a man that is super sweet but gruff, amazing secondary characters and suspense to keep me wondering. It had everything you want in a book. The angst was high when it came to Hayley’s past. I didn’t cry but I felt her pain. I also laughed at the banter and felt strength that all the characters seemed to have. The humor had me laughing so hard at some points. There’s so much to this book but it was easy to read and flowed great.

My main issue was with the suspense. This book had it. Had me on the edge of my seat, had me wondering when the big moment was going to happen to find out the whys of it all. But when that moment came, while it was awesome, I felt a little disappointed by it. I expected more I guess. More explanation on the whys and how’s of it all. Even with that it was a great book and I can’t wait to read the other books in the series. Those secondary characters really do steal your heart. 4 Star #2OCCJD
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I'm glad I didn't listen to the negative reviews . I often don't trust all the five-star reviewers as I'm not sure they're very discerning . However, this book had a lot of elements and a lot of tension as well as snappy dialogue. Really good dialogue . Period . Having said that I do want to warn that there are some scenes that may trigger flashbacks for those who are sensitive to violent scenes and there are situations where the hero makes mistakes . But I like that nobody's perfect in the story and the love that Chris and our heroine share is what makes them become better people . Also, there are some interesting philosophical discussions in this book that I felt were deeply meaningful . Life is complicated and gritty and difficult and I like that this was all part of the plot . Secondary characters were fun and interesting and of course we'll probably see more of them in the subsequent books . I hope they're not too perfect either.
I truly liked Hayley aka Slick. She has been through so much yet she has remain strong. It had to be hard moving place to place creating one new identity after another.

Man, Shooter aka Chris was so sexy. Though he had to under estimate that skank he was sleeping with. He was also a man that was untrusting. Have to wonder if it had to do with his background. Whether that was the military that made him that way or whether that was the past with his father.

Shooter was pretty mean to Slick right off the bat. You wanted to reach in the book and slap him around. That did not stop his concern about her and where she was staying. That also did not stop his attraction to her.

I love Shooter’s alpha attitude and Slick’s sassy attitude. I also loved Shooter’s crew. They were pretty cool and funny guys.

I loved the chemistry between Shooter and Slick. I loved how understanding Shooter was on what Slick was going through. He was not only understanding but patient as well.

I had done whispersync with this book and enjoyed the book so much.
Overall Opinion I have had this in my (huge and ever growing) tbr list for a long time, but for some reason I put off on reading it.

I agree wholeheartedly with other reviewers that this is not a biker/mc romance. Yes, the H has a motorcycle. Yes, he also has a garage and works on motorcycles and cars. And yes, the H grew up in an mc and has loose ties to the local mc. BUT that is not the focus at all. He is not a member of the mc, and even though there are a few interactions with the mc -- it is not really important to the story. So, please don't go into this looking for an mc romance (especially after looking at the cover). I would say it was more about him being an (ex) Army Ranger and his military buddies. It also is mainly focused on the h and her moving all around with no identity and an obvious traumatic past.

I did enjoy it. I liked the build-up from being hesitant and untrusting of each other - to friends - to more. It is probably considered a "slow burn", but where I normally am bothered by those I felt like it worked well here.

I would've preferred a farther glimpse into their future, but with this being the first book in a series I am hopeful that I will see them in the other books in the series (and yes, I do want to continue the series). I was also a little frustrated with the OW drama. Those two reasons had me lower my rating, but I'm still happy I finally read it!

Brief Summary of the Storyline This is Hayley and Chris's story. They meet when Hayley arrives in a new town and ends up renting a small house of Chris's. He is hesitant at first to trust her, and she has major trust issues because of her past. Chris lives next door to the rental and through food and more visits they form a friendship along with his military buddies, but they share a secret attraction that causes a stronger connection to form. After a while of denying their connection, they give in and fall in love. There are some big secrets revealed, some sexy times, some suspenseful moments, and some great friendships formed...and they get a HEA.

POV This alternated between focusing on Hayley and Chris in 3rd person narrative.

Overall Pace of Story Good. I never skimmed, and I thought it flowed well.

Instalove No, they take a while to develop stronger feelings.

H rating 3 stars. Chris. He had me conflicted. I didn't like some of his behavior, but I appreciated how he cared for the h.

h rating 4 stars. Hayley. I liked her. I felt bad for her past, but I appreciated her smarts and how she was strong regardless of what happened to her.

Sadness level Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull Yes

Heat level Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex Yes

OW/OM drama Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM Not technically

Cheating Borderline, but probably not technically cheating

Separation Yes

Closure This had pretty good closure with what I would call a HEA. I would've preferred a farther glimpse into their future, but it was still pretty good.
