Chauncey Smith had loving, attentive parents and a safe, nurturing home. But he knew a piece of him was missing—a relationship with his biological parents. Adopted as an infant, Chauncey was raised with the importance of Family and Faith. But it wasn’t until adulthood, when Chauncey set out on a quest to locate his biological mother and father, that he truly understood this.

At times joyous, at times heartbreaking, Chauncey’s journey included his adoptive parents and siblings, friends, and biological family members who didn’t even know who he was. His determination to make peace with his past culminated in an experience readers won’t be likely to forget.

Written for those raised by their biological parents as well as adoptees, So That’s Who I Am sheds light on what it’s like to be adopted and provides a relatable yet unique story sure to resonate with other adoptees. Regardless of their backgrounds, however, readers will learn that adoptees didn’t have a choice our first inheritance was abandonment. We are simply different—neither better nor worse—and we can find healing in this journey.

This is a well-told, often poignant testimony about a young man’s search for a balanced life: finding and embracing his biological family as he also loves his adopted parents. In his case, the adventure was a fruitful and rewarding one; Chauncey Smith openly admits that not all such quests go well. The book is filled with encouraging nuggets of wisdom about how an adopted child can relate to a conflicting myriad of inner yearnings, and I appreciate how his Christian faith was a factor on his road to wellness. The story is frankly told, his moments of doubt and despair and spiritual cynicism openly admitted . . . which makes the story even stronger.

A wonderful account of a mans pilgrimage to find his birth parents. A much loved adopted child can still feel the overwhelming need to find out where they came from. Anyone who has a relationship with a person that has been adopted or have adopted a child, should read this book.
Chauncey gives an insightful perspective on adoption. The good and the bad, but always grateful and thankful for the life he had, and all the people who love and loved him dearly.
I have read this book in one - very busy, mind you - weekend. Every chance I got, I had to come back to it to see what came next. At the end of second page I had tears in my eyes already. That's unusual for me. I had heard parts of this fascinating story, but, with the book, I got to learn details, the intense emotional situations, the drama, and the final joy. Give your heart a gift and get your copy. You won't regret it.
I was amazed at how it went off in different directions all the time.pictures before the story?skipped around to much. would not recomend it to anyone.
the only reason I read it was because we have a adopted child all grown up but it jumped all over the story. So I did not like it at all. but I am pleased for Chauncey that he thinks how he does now
Chauncey Smith's honest account of the emotions churning inside a child growing up knowing they are adopted resonated with me because I have family members who are adopted and have longed to connect the past to the present. Unfortunately, when they did finally connect them, there was not the happy result Mr. Smith experienced. Now I understand how to help them move beyond that additional rejection and grow knowing they were specifically selected and wanted. The book laid bare the angst he felt at that first meeting and not wanting to hurt his adoptive family in the process. Ultimately, this is a story of love and growth. Kudos to Chauncey Smith for opening his heart and life for all to see. Thank you for sharing!
I have had the great fortune to grow up with Chauncey as my close friend. Having said that, Chauncey would be the first person to tell you that I wouldn't hold back on my true opinion of his book. It was great. One of the things I like most about this book is it's honesty. Dealing with adoption is emotionally messy and "So That's Who I Am" provides a window into what the adopted child experiences as they try to find their place in the world. There is no "Follow this Plan" formula to make everything great. Just an honest telling of Chauncey's experiences and the life lessons he learned along the way. It is funny, thought provoking and heartfelt. I truly believe every adopted child, particularly those adopted at birth who are curious about their biological parents, would benefit from it's reading as it will provide them with courage, comfort and a guide to help them decide if reaching out to find their biological parent is right or wrong for them.
I gush with pride for Chauncey, this is a story of a man whom I have known since I was 13. His story revealed chapters of his life I did not know about. His honest and open approach to his journey and the stories he shared drew me closer to the man I love and cherish as a friend. His story is full of encouragement and hope for those also wondering where they fit into this world. I am not adopted, but I could not put the book down until I had read it completely. I laughed and I cried. These are my indicators of a 'worth the read book!' Well done coach, well done.
This book was so inspirational for me. I could NOT put this book down and stayed up all night reading it. From the foreword by Sandi Patty (wow!!!) and the interspersed Hollywood stories of Chauncey Smith breaking social limits because of his tremendous desire to live his dreams, to the heart wrenching epilogue, this book had my rapt attention.

Chauncey's journey of figuring out who he was and where he fit in is a story that applies for everyone, even if you are not adopted. There were so many poignant moments in the book, I often teared up.The Christian perspective offers meaning and familiarity without overburdening the book or sounding preachy.

Thank you Mr. Smith for sharing the gift of your memoir and for publicly sharing your vulnerabilities and strengths. I hope you write more.
